Yesterday was Awesome! Nate had an orthodontic appointment and one rule of our homeschool is going to the dentist earns the day off. So we had the rest of the day to do whatever we wanted. Whoo HOO! After a dash by the grocery and grabbing Subway sandwiches we headed back to our spread. We were almost out of town when Nathan spotted a guy on the roadside, a guy looking for a ride, but not the way we were heading. He asked me about the sign he had. I thought it said, “Will Work For Food”
Car quiet for 5 minutes. I had already stopped thinking about the man. I was thinking of all the cool stuff I was going to get made after groceries were away and the chores were done.
“Mom, could you turn around…can we go back? I want to give him my sandwich. “
Nathan is built to give. He helps people in the grocery store and on the street without me or even them asking. He sees a need, he helps. Simple. Nathan proves it doesn’t have be complicated or tough, we just make it so with all our “thoughts”
I hoped the guy was legit, for Nate’s sake. Then set all that weirdness aside. Who cares if the guy really is down on his luck or if this is his day job. Not my concern. Judging is not my job. I am here to turn the car around and go back. ( Baby you can drive my car. Yes, I’m gonna be a star… beep beep beep beep ~ yeah)
So off we went back to town. The freeway being the freeway made it hard to get close to his off ramp again. So Nathan jumped out and zigzag-ed through the off ramp cars to deliver his sandwich. The guy was good to my boy and they had a moment together. I was proud of myself for not walking Nate across the street! *guffaw* As easy as you please Nathan did what so many of us talk ourselves out of…he went out of his way for someone he could have passed over. To Nate it was no big deal. He just got back into the car and we drove for a while listening to Dragonforce on the CD player. Me trying NOT to say anything because it would have ruined the moment. I did manage a high five, Nathan met me half way on that.
Gratitude List:
For Nathan, my son and my teacher.
