Post It Notes

Today I have a series of little things to tell, so its going to look like notes on a Post It. When I was a working girl I would write the little notes and stick them to myself. So I didn’t have to read them, I would walk through the place and other people would read them when they saw me. People can’t resist reading a Post It. They would read them aloud and I would be reminded to do the payroll! * hoot* I would love to say I planned this whole thing with the notes, so I could get others to remind me to do my stuff, but really I was afraid to put the note down so I stuck it to my non-existent chestie and went about my business and the sweet folks I worked with did read my chest!

So that is the visual your get from me this morning as you read my notes!   * GUFFAW *

Autumn Cluster Freebie!

Howdy ALL! I finally got that freebie packaged up for you. Here go…

autumn01_preview_web

http://www.4shared.com/file/135516840/3d90ef74/jodiann_AutmWrdArt.html

This was made way back when, ( two weeks) Kim had just opened up at the DigiScrap Vault and she had this awesome grab bag going. These Beady Bits were in it and they are so rich with reflections and character. What great accent colors for fall too!

Well I missed being able to put this up with the Grab Bag. I forget why now, general confusion most likely. But the wonder of how this all works is once the bag is over each item is for sale individually. So you can still pick up some Beady Bits of you own and make some fall stuff with them.

So, Life is Good!

Did you know the line “life is good” is trademarked? I should be attributing it to someone right now for using it twice. Amazing. I don’t remember her name, but she does all those tee shirts with simple pictures on it and the tag line…life is good. There I go again!

Years ago I made a design for a Great Dane Rescue Tee Shirt once and  put it up on one of those sites that print by the order and people bought it, the rescue got paid and everyone was happy, for about 3 days. Then the design went away, I got a letter saying LIFE IS GOOD is a trademark and I can’t use it. Not in writing, not in speech, not in art.

So that is why I know this little tidbit. Now, I understand one must protect artistic works. I really do. I have seen this artist’s work and its as clever, as its easy to copy.  So I get why she needs to be so aggressive protecting it. Its the idea more than the art that needs protecting because the art is so simple anyone could make them.  In my defense the design I made was nothing close to hers, and the Life is Good wording was only part of the text. So I didn’t feel like I ripped off her design, I felt the words were universal. In her defense, My SIL, Wendy had one of her tee shirts and its adorable and just yesterday I was walking by a jeep with a tire cover that said.LIFE IS GOOD TM” and  it made me smile all over, except the TM was almost as big as a Law Book on the tire cover. Which made be think about all the disappointed folks who didn’t get a tee shirt (sad) with a Great Dane on it ( sadder)and all the money rescue didn’t get ( saddest) and how I re-did the design without those words and still was not allowed to upload it. Its like I had the cooties!  Smile long faded.

I started thinking. ( dangerous)

This artist lady OWNS the rights to a common sentence. Isn’t that just a little too much?

I mean, I run about saying “Cool Beans!” constantly. Would I slave the rest of the world to my will if I developed a line of clothing and spare tire covers? Hmmm?  I know, no one wants to say “Cool Beans” now, but maybe a sexually charge image of a Lima Bean fondling its own derriere would change all that? Now everyone is saying, Cool Beans with pouty lips! Should I steal their joy?

Essentially Life is Good and Cool Beans are affirmations along the same lines as All Is Well or God is in His Heaven and All Is Right With The World. A general positive statement of how things are going. What if all the good ones get TM-ed? Would we all need to be on meds because no one can say the uplifting things anymore?  In some later reality are we going to do away with money and just have a credit chip imbedded in our eyebrows so uttering Life is Good, or Getter Done would be the equivalent of dropping money in a curse jar? Or would we just have to add a little disclaimer…a nod to the word owner.

Life Is Good!, Tee-em. Janye Dough. 1998”

Sound a little creepy-robot to you?  To me too.

When I think about trademarked words I think about  “ Its The Real Thing” or  “Nothing Comes Between Me and My Calvins”

You know, things real people don’t say in general conversation and if they did, they don’t anymore. Not because the TM-police would snatch your  Starbucks TM money and staple your mouth closed, but because its like speaking Info-mercial.  Billy Mays was the only guy who could speak Info-mercial and  NOT clear the room.

_______

I made a video!! *HooT!*

Okay, it took a while to master it, but I have proven to the world I can talk for less than 10 minutes! Mostly I wanted to prove to my hubby, Jack, who has heard me talk about a single subject for up to 4 hours more than once. The man is a saint! He stayed awake 2 out of 3 time!

* HOOT!*

Jack got this program, Camtasia 5. He installed it on my computer over the weekend and I said, Oh! That’s nice, Darlin’ Thank YOU! and went on my merry way.  Its for making videos…I wondered why in the world he wants me to make videos, right? But I thought it was cool and  went and emptied the dishwasher. La-di-da!

Yesterday I got an email from a sweet lady (Hey Jackie!) about my Clear Cover Styles. They were giving her lemons and she wanted the cool goodies she saw in the preview. Well I tried to explain how to get what she wanted in my email back to her, but it just didn’t seem right to me. Its hard to explain pictures with words. Hard-Hard-Hard I tell you!

So I thought well, there’s this little video program here? How hard could it be? Uhhhhhh! The program turned out to be a snap to use, talking and moving the mouse at the same time, opening and closing images and NOT going “um-ah-okay-okay-wait” every other minute WAS HARD!! SO I didn’t bother to get good at those things! LOL!

I just hit record and started talking and mousing!

30 minutes later…* Guffaw*

Come to find out YouTube limits its free video uploads to 10 minutes.  I just kept doing it till I got it under that. I was not easy for a blabber like me! I could have cut the thing all up with edits, but maybe with the next one. Talking and PSing was  hard  enough!

At one point I got it down to 10 minutes 29 seconds. My brightest son, the one who no longer has a large toenail ( Insolence!) said if we cut out all the “Ums” he might be able to edit it down to 5 minutes.

Burn!

…and then I took his toenail as my trophy, your Honor.

Happy Autumn! Happy Spring!

Many of us are transitioning to a new season today! Here is it officially autumn, but the weather is warm. Love this time of year a yummy 70 to 80 degrees for a week or so! LOL! We often joke we get 15 minutes of Autumn and 15 minutes of Spring.  Oh! There it went! *guffaw* That was our 15 minutes!

Anywhoo! I am tickled Pink today is a transitional day, it fits so well with what is going on in my world. I feel I am ready to sell what I make as well as give freebies, so…

I have a store! …COol huh?

I have been accepted by Digi Scrap Obsession. My favorite store for buying is now where I have a designer’s spot!! Well, not exactly… I have a spot, but I am not in the designer list and my picture isn’t up on the designer wall just yet, but that all is on the way.  I DO have my first item in the store and that is enough for me to start blabbing about it! Whoo HOO!

Since you all have been with me from the beginning I wanted to tell you WAY ahead of the the Grand Opening.  Your love and support of my freebies and this blog has been overwhelming and it is your doing I have come this far. Thank you from the tips of my toes to the top of my head!

You are the best friends a girl could have!! * hand to heart*

Because I am finding me feet with the designing for the store and because Digi Scrap Obsession aka DSO  has a rigorous Quality Check before each product is allowed into the store I will be up to my eyeballs in that stuff for a while.  You know me, I will get here with freebies, just not as many. I have one ready for you, but its not packaged up for download.

I am starting my store fill up with a Photoshop Style. They are my absolute favorite thing about Photoshop. Not to worry PSP users. I do PSP too. I will come up with some snazzy goodies just for you too! Promise!

Here is my first for sale goodie!

Two Tips…

What works best with these styles is to put a whole lot of detail and layers under them to really make the most color come blasting out! I like to add them last after I have built a dramatic element or page and watch what happens!

If you find the style is not see through, duplicate the layer you want to see and apply the style to the top layer. Bam! Out pops the details! Whoo HOO!

Happy Transition Day!

Nature: You Scary!

Minding my own business, puttering along on my riding mower. I got stung on the arm while going under a tree branch. I thought it was a wasp. They hang out in the cool trees when it gets really hot. It hurt like crazy, but I wasn’t flopping around having a seizure just yet. So I kept going. Genius I am I kept circling the tree. Sting, Sting! Soon I started having muscle cramps, but I have had those before from wasps so whatever! The sites started raising up with welts and they were spreading. Teh! Still nothing to worry about, put it out of my mind and kept mowing. The mower jammed and Jack was fixing it, so I got my nippers to take off some of those low lying branches so I didn’t keep brushing them and getting stung.  Did I say I was a GENIUS! Uh-huh! Ever on the lookout for the wasps I saw nothing. The little branch dropped with a good chop and brushed my hand. I was on fire! My hand was swollen in seconds and I was completely shocked watching it. I looked closer at what I cut and all over the underside of the leaves were these little things.

MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA

I know, I thought the same thing….this little thing? Within 5 minutes of the branch falling, I had stomach cramps, deep tissue pain, joint pain. I couldn’t think clear. I think getting stung by a few of them is what did it. I was a puffy medicine head and I had taken no medicine.

Jack gave me some Benedryl and that was all I needed…more fluff for my brain. If it weren’t for the twitching in my legs I could have slept. What I did is sat around, twitching with a bag of frozen peas on my marshmallow hand. When it got too cold I put in on my arm, then the other arm. What a mesh!  Nature: You Scary!

The pain wasn’t the worst I have ever had, its just a bit beyond what I could push away with my mind, nothing worse than that. It did wear me down though. What it felt like was the moment when you come in from the cold with super cold hands and those brief seconds when you hands warm up they hurt like crazy? That’s it, except it didn’t go away like that feeling does. I guess a “brain freeze” in the hand would cover the feeling as well, but it didn’t go away for 12 hours. The headache I got from the whole thing was just a side dish to the stomach cramps! Lordy! I was trying to laugh it off saying, “ Its like I did a hundred sit ups, but I haven’t done any!! WHoo HOo! Yay ME!  Its the get out in your yard and get powned by nature exercise program. Just sit and twitch!!”

Jack finished the mowing, ( YES!!) the boys helped with dinner. I slept it off eventually. Last night late we looked it up what these things are. I am glad I didn’t read this when I was bad off, or Jack would have wanted to go the ER.

Its an Asp or Puss Moth Caterpillar but mine were in the pre-molt stage They looked like Mr. Heat Blister to me. They are prettier later on…like little fluffy Chinchillas. Oh! They hate being touched. Go figure! I have to disagree with the part where I says it hurts for a hour! Nope! It hurts for as long as its going to hurt, science nerd!

I did end up pretty good, because my boys downloaded a Patton Oswalt Comedy Show from Xbox Live and I yucked it up watching Patton. I think he is the most adorable SURLY comic EVER! anz I lurve me those surly comix!!

Anywho! Today I am all better after a night’s sleep and a new found respect fear of caterpillars. I still taste metal when I drink water, but hey I didn’t have to go to the ER. The worst place to have a minor health problem on the weekend. Sit in an uncomfortable chair and feel bad and be bored for hours. Yup! That some class A healing right there!

My oldest son, Dillon. He said I always find the poisonous things so I am not allowed to visit Australia, now. LOL! I have always wanted to visit there, but when I read a book on Australia we found there are poisonous things everywhere. Dillon said, Box Jellyfish might get out of the water to chase me down! LOL!

Way to think positive, D! HOoT!!

Thanks Nature, the humility lesson could not have come at a better time!!

Free Photoshop CS4 Classes

 Yup. FREE.

Got an email about this 6 month online course being given by creativetechs.com and I jumped in. I keep meaning to blog about it, and since the 3rd class is today I am starting with this so I am sure to squeeze it in.

Here’s the deal.

CreativeTechs offers free worldwide online training to all as long as you are willing to show up at a specific time and day of the week. If you wish to download the classes after the live taping it will cost you, if you choose to access a specific 5 week course load it will cost you and if you choose to take chance on all their classes for a month it…uh-huh, will cost you.

The costs are very reasonable. They are just getting themselves in the saddle for now so this information might change, it already has from the first week’s broadcast, so no whining if you find it different when you go to their website in 15 minutes.

Download a day’s class and notes with worksheets. $15.  Yes, its the very same free class you would get if you showed up at the specific time ( 11am Pacific Time)

Download 5 classes in a specific course section. $45.

Download All Classes current and archived with all course materials. $50 per month ( no contract)

They offer a different set of courses each week day.  Thursday is Photoshop.  The also offer an extensive Photography course, Lightroom,  and  Dreamweaver classes. Plenty of classes are archived as well.

For a full list of classes and for a break down of this weighty 6 month Photoshop Course check out their training area at creativetechs.com/training

* About the Classes

I found them easy to follow along in PS CS3 and take notes. ( yes, will pen on paper) The instructor Jason Hoppe does have a tendency to be somewhat scattered in his on the fly  answers to live chat questions, but the course is well laid out and when he sticks to the script ( who of us does! LOL) the classes shine! Hoppe’s only fault could be he has worked in PS too long. You know the kind of person who was there when the computer gods and man touched? He wants to reminisce about how far Photoshop has come, the deal is he learned and discarded techniques over a long period of time and the shear wall of learning it all at once never hit him. The fact that he is teaching to those of us starring at the wall without have been a pitiful newb shows from time to time. Don’t be shaken by this. He does come back to center. If you find yourself lost it will be only momentarily.  Other times he just wants to show off how fast he is. Let’s call it Ego Speed.  Again this only happens for a few minutes and then its back to the course tract, so hang in there.

In short, if you fall off the back of the bus he comes back around and picks you up.

If you want Ego Speed for the entertainment value only, check out Re-touch Thursday ( 1 pm Pacific)  where he retouches damaged, badly shot and poorly composed pictures into things of beauty. Its awesome if you don’t have to try and learn it but just want to sit back and watch. Reminds me of Bob Ross ( Rest In Peace, Sweetie) on Jolt Cola.

At his best Hoppe offers truckloads of shortcuts, tips, and timesavers. Since he likes to blaze he has learned the fastest way to do things and that is a PLUS. He shows you how to do the default way then shows his tips for flying with his hair on fire. Its right up my ally because I move at turtle speed and would like to be faster.

* How I Get The Most Out Of These Classes

I watch the 1 1/2 hours of course/Q&A each Thursday. Taking notes and following along in CS3. Then  the next day I re-write my notes throwing out the things that I already internalized or parts I made note of that were strictly CS4 enabled. Then I spend the rest of the week till the next class working in Photoshop and trying to use as much of what I learned as possible.

If you are vacillating over whether to devote yourself to learn keyboard shortcuts, no more hemming and hawing, learn them!  I thought I could do it all with the mouse when I first started learning Photoshop about 6 months ago and I had to abandon that ship.

Photoshop is just too complicated a program to rely on drop down menus and a few claw stroke keyboard moves unless you want to have moss grow on your behind!!

Embrace shortcuts.

Especially for this basic 5 week course set. After Hoppe finishes the basics he is going to fly! If you are still using drop downs for most everything you will just be watching. The only way not to become  a spectator is to learn the shortcuts he is teaching now and get good at them. Long term, let’s face it, we all want to fly at Ego Speed!

Today’s Class is on Selections. Its starts at 11am Pacific Time ( Seattle based) Get signed up for classes at least an hour before, log on the web ( you will get an email with the GO TO WEBINAR link) at least 20 minutes before classes start. The crew will be chatting away so you will know you are in. Sometimes the classes fill fast so get there early and ruminate while enjoying a little bit of an inside look.

SOFT WHISPER Freebie!!

Kim B has a new kit out, when does she not? *guffaw* its mind blowing how she produces such quality work on a weekly basis, but I have learned to roll with it and pick my jaw up off the floor as I do so.

This time around its all those dusty pinks and vintage feeling goodies that go together easily, but with the luscious twists of gold or silver toned do-dads and punches of burnt orange and buttercream. I know it sound like it will not work, but it does beautifully like all her work there is something for the matchy matchy side of us and a few touches for times we want to get punchy!

Anyone who endured the 80’s will recognize the pearl accents and mauves with lace as the “country” look of that time. So its safe and well known there, but throw in the newsprint alpha, and mauve to orange tipped ribbon along with some rhinestones and bugle bead, bead spills and we turn the corner to a new place.

Each image will take you to Kim’s Store page for Soft Whisper. Its on sale right now for $3.85 for a limited time. Regular Price $5.50.

Sun Expected!

Happy Wednesday all!  Sun expected this day, after overcast skies and rain since late Thursday we here in Texas who are used the the weather changing dramatically by the minute have enjoyed a vacation from asking “ What’s The Weather Gonna’ Do?”  Its been nice!

Gratitude List!

1. Thanks for all these great people I am meeting! I am upside down with happiness with the sheer creativity, generosity and smiling faces of the people I am meeting through the scrapbooking community!

We are GREAT people! WHOO HOO!

2. Thanks For Incontinent Dogs.  Just when I think I can’t handle another thing to be happening. I am on the phone, rain is falling on my portable air compressor so I must run out to get it, and I remember something I have write down, the laundry is ready to reboot …and… SPLASH! GLURP! My attention is riveted to spot….the actual spot!

We cannot buy this level of clarity!

I wasn’t focused. I was all over the place. Time to put my mind to one thing for a while…On Poo!  And  too get those dogs out in the rain to potty!! * smile*

3. For my Jack, who took out the trash…Nope. Who did the dishes….Nope. Okay, just for my Jack. A very useful guy when the computers break, lawn mowers go belly up, and who is a car whizz!

Honey, you sit right there and wait for something to break. I have blogged about it now, so you won’t be waiting long.

4. For my two awesome sons. Who have been feeding me a steady diet of Patton Oswalt and  Foamy The Squirrel.  Which I am kind of convinced could be the same person if the level of angst were all I was measuring.

Thanks for the laughs, kids!

5. For my seed stash being ruined. Now that doesn’t sound like a good thing, but it was. I saved seeds in there I collected on my HONEYMOON to the Grand Canyon 17 years ago! If I hadn’t planted them yet, it was NEVER going to happen. It was a sea of envelopes with no rhyme or reason and now I don’t have to sort through it 3 times looking for something and STILL NOT find it. I am free! Phew!

Now I get to order new ones! Cool Beans!

Simple is good!

____________

Okay after recalling every post I made with freebie in it and deleting the text link, laboriously, I figured out how to do it in a likity-split at 4 shared. I was just a bit weird-ed out by deleting it all off the server. I got over it and soon I was slamming that delete button!! Grrr-owl! Jodiann can delete!!

I left all the freebie links to stuff I made with Kim B ‘s stuff. She is still selling those kits and packs so when you download the freebie make sure to stop by her store and get something for yourself. Just Check out the TOU for a link you can copy/paste into your browser. It will take you to the right page of her store if I knew it at the time I built the goodie. Sometimes I was using a grab bag and the items were not listed individually at the store yet. So then you only have the title of the item. You can do a search at DSO and find it right quick!

You deserve more than just freebies, buy yourself a whole kit now and again to go with your freebie downloads. You will feel so rich and well cared for!!  …Pampered even!

I am packing up a little freebie for tomorrow, more word art to go with the Summer Word Art Cluster, this time its Autumn. Eventually I hope to get to an entire set with that alpha. Its fun to play with.

Today I leave you with cool pictures I took last Friday, I have this Jimpson Weed Bush…more the size of a car now and I was going out to cut it back drastically, but then I saw all the wild things …bees, spiders, more spiders, who were enjoying it and left it. I am so glad I did because the sky opened up and it rained for days. All those creatures had full protection instead.

If you are afraid of spiders,  see you tomorrow… bub-bye…don’t scroll down!

Okay all I have is spider pictures, there were mice, and birds, and bees of all kinds, as well as butterflies and a few dragonflies too. Only the spiders stood still long enough for me to get a clear shot of them in the overcast light.

Simpatico Kit Freebie

What a delightful weekend! Gentle rain fell starting Friday and it just didn’t stop. So nice to have rain and coolness ( made me want to bake!). Our storm fearful dogs didn’t alert at all, they just cuddled down on their sofas like the rest of the dogs. Cats went nuts not wanting to be outside but wanting to be outside…kwim? They get over things or exact their revenge by destroying the shower curtain…either way life goes on and their diabolical plans move forward.

It was just the battery recharge we all needed. Mmmmm!

Remember today was the day I was to disable freebie links from March 2009 to June 30, 2009? Well I did get going on that, but my timer ran out so its not all done yet. Some June Freebies are still enabled.  WHoo HOO! One more day to grab those. I will be blasting away at those tomorrow morning.

I added some pages to the weblog over the weekend. Some things I wish I had found when I was a digital scrapbook newbie like a scrap term cheat sheet and list of stores and scrapping sites. I just didn’t know where to look at first. If you see some I missed don’t be shy, write me. jojo@jodianncates.com

I have added these pages in the right navigation bar so that is where you will find them after this post is covered up.

Freebie Time!

Here is a kit built for the September Color Challenge at DSO. I threw in some purple since I firmly believe green and brown need purple to be happy.  Could be every color needs purple.  *snort*
