Now on to the freebie, but first a little bitty story. We have 4 great danes and we consider them all to be pretty smart, but Phoebe takes the cake! About 6 years ago when our youngest Dane, Harvey joined the pack… Phoebe got over him pretty quick. He was just a pup, untrained, with abandonment issues. He cried, got all the attention and thus, Phoebe wanted him gone. Yesterday, preferably! When she wanted his sleeping chair, she unnerved him with her penetrating stare until he got up and left. When he was sleeping she would push a blanket over him with her nose, like she was covering up poop. When he walked by she moved her head so their eyes would not meet. When he wanted to play she became extremely interested in an invisible spot on the tile floor. She blocked his path to the kitchen, the hall, and my room. She also stood between him and all the humans she cared deeply for…Jack, Jack and Jack! Daddy Jack was HER special guy and the poop bucket was not going to get anywhere near him. HOOT!
Harvey hardened to this treatment, Phoebe’s intimidating gaze stopped working and as a sick puppy Harvey seldom left the chair. She was out of luck for long stretches. So she devised another way to get him up and out. Watching Harvey she noticed how afraid he was to let me out of his sight, she figured out that when I went outside Harvey dashed for the door as if his butt were on fire. So one day when staring Harvey down didn’t move him from his chair she launched herself at the door. I, thinking she has to pee really bad, launched MYSELF at the door and thus Harvey launched himself at the door. Phoebe dexterously swerved to avoid crashing into us and made a dance like U-turn and hopped delicately as a great dane can into Harvey’s still warm chair. Leaving me with my hand on the door knob and Harvey looking expectantly up at me.
A pair of suckers!
Before tucking her head in for a well earned nap, Phoebe paused briefly to give us an extra long knowing look. I would love to tell you this was the LAST time she ever did this but, Harvey is 6 years old now, Phoebe is 15 doesn’t dance a U-turn as nibble as she used to, but we fall for tricks at least twice a week! HOOT!
